Pangassius

Pangasius, scientifically known as Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, is a fast-growing freshwater catfish widely farmed across Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam, Thailand, and Bangladesh. It has become an important commercial species due to its efficient farming, high yield, and strong global demand for its affordable, boneless fillets, commonly marketed as “Basa” or “Pangas.”
Pangasius has a sleek, elongated body with a smooth, scaleless skin, a slightly flattened head, and long whisker-like barbels typical of catfish. Its coloration ranges from greyish-blue on the dorsal side to a pale, silvery underside. The species generally grows 60–100 cm in length but can exceed 1 meter and weigh over 10–15 kg in natural river systems. Known for its mild flavor, soft texture, and culinary versatility, Pangasius is popular in both domestic markets and international seafood industries.
