Shingey fish, commonly known as Shingi or Singhi, is a freshwater catfish scientifically called Heteropneustes fossilis. It is widely found in South Asian countries such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal. This fish is recognized by its long whisker-like barbels and a sharp spine near its pectoral fin that can cause a painful sting. It has the special ability to breathe air, allowing it to survive in low-oxygen waters and even stay alive out of water for short periods. Shingi fish is popular as a nutritious food and is often valued for its high protein and iron content.
