Grass Carp

Grass Carp, scientifically known as Ctenopharyngodon idella, is a large freshwater herbivorous fish widely cultivated across Asia and introduced to many regions for aquatic weed control and commercial farming. Native to the major river systems of China and Eastern Asia, it has become an important aquaculture species due to its rapid growth, plant-based diet, and strong market acceptance.
Grass Carp has an elongated, torpedo-shaped body with dark olive scales on the back and a pale, silvery belly. It features a broad head, a terminal mouth without barbels, and powerful fins suited for fast-flowing waters. This species commonly reaches 60–100 cm in length but can grow up to 1.5 meters and weigh over 30 kg in ideal conditions. Known for its mild taste and firm, white flesh, Grass Carp is widely used in various Asian culinary preparations.
